LATVIA

Pale Primary School is situated in Pāle, a small rural village with around 700 inhabitants. It is located in the northern part of Latvia, about 20km from the Baltic Sea.
We have been providing primary education in our area since 1936. There are 90 students at primary school level (7-16 years old), 29 children in pre-school, 17 teachers and 7 technical workers. The regional government has been supporting different after-school clubs in our school.
As there is a reasonably high rate of unemployment in our region, we have about 40 students from low-income families. About 20 students have learning difficulties and some students are at a risk of social exclusion. For that reason, we provide not only the general education programme but also a programme for students with the learning difficulties as well.
One of our aims is to help our young people feel included in society and involve them in non-formal learning activities.
We have participated in:
• e-Twinning projects (since 2010);
• ESF project Supporting Enterprises to Decrease the Risk of Social Exclusion Among Young People (2012);
• Youth in Action Programme  - Youth Exchange Special Skills of Special People (2013) – teachers and students participated in the Play With Me festival in Ljubljana;
• A local project called Step by Step Towards Collaboration (2015) - we landscaped and cleaned the area in our village;
• Junior Achievement Latvia – Young Enterprise (started this school year);
We have certified, hardworking and reliable staff (languages, ICT), eager to improve their skills and learn new things. The school team is very united, positively motivated and invested in the goals of the school. Also, their activity and ability to motivate students has increased.
One key factor in improving their skills is the opportunity to work on international projects, which serves as a fantastic opportunity to share and enrich their experience with colleagues from different countries.
We have good sport achievements in our region and we are proud of our musical families. Our school takes part in social activities in our area and successfully co-operates with the regional government on various projects.
In 2010, we began to work on our first eTwinning project. In the school year 2016/2017 we started actively participating in eTwinning projects. One of the most interesting is our “European Chain Reaction” project where we created a chain with 23 European schools. More information can be found at: http://ecr2017.blogspot.com/
Since 2010, the school headmistress has been an eTwinning Ambassador and the Deputy Ambassador for the European Union's 7th Framework Programme "Science in Society" (Science in Society, SiS) funded project "SCIENTIX" from 2013 - 2016.
The headmistress has also participated in the Samsung school training programme in 2014; our team was one of 30 schools selected from a total of 215 schools in Latvia that wanted to participate. (More information:

The 30 schools enrolled in this programme had the opportunity master their digital skills for free over the course of five months from January 2014. In 2014, the headmistress attended an eTwinning professional development workshop in Portugal entitled "Closing the Gap between Family and School: The Role of Digital Technologies" where one of the workshops focussed on Quick Reader codes and how to use them in school activities.
Over the last five years, we have actively participated in various environmental activities like collecting waste paper and used batteries. We also took part in various competitions and environmental projects.
