SLOVAKIA

Spojena skola internatna Zdana is a public school for children with special needs, situated in Ždaňa in the Eastern part of Slovakia, and was established in 1961. The school is equipped for 150 pupils, mainly from disadvantaged social backgrounds and environments. We provide learning programmes for children and young people with a lower mental handicap and children from socially disadvantaged environments or with social integration difficulties. Our programmes create key elements of care, education and therapy.
The whole school complex includes a primary school for children with special needs (age 6-16), a practical school for young people with special needs (age 16-18), and a special nursery school which is not involved in this project.  We also work alongside a centre for psychological and special-pedagogical consultancy which offers diagnostic consultation for parents and children.
We have 30 employees in total, which includes special pedagogues, psychologists, psychotherapists, assistance and administrative staff, cooks and others). Our highly specialised teams cooperate closely with socially and emotionally vulnerable young people aged from 2 to 18. They provide a unique learning experience and vocational opportunities, whilst promoting self-discipline and positive behaviour management. We believe in an integral way of teaching which improves learning for children from different backgrounds and of different abilities .This brings positive social outcomes for our young people. The school is supporting the artistically talented Roma children as this can provide a competitive advantage for them.
The project itself and the idea of international cooperation is new, however the school already offers a number of activities that promote cooperation in general.
We offer an extensive array of activities in the field of theatre, and we take part in the "School Has Talent" competition, where children can sing, dance or recite a poem. We also take part also in crafts such as drawing and painting (fine arts).
At the moment we have limited experience with international cooperation on a large scale, however on a national and regional level, we have experience with information exchange, art and sports competitions, and more.
